New player involvement policy is approved by the NBA Board of Governors.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA Board of Governors approved a new Player involvement Policy today, with the goal of encouraging player involvement in the NBA's regular season. The new policy will go into effect with the start of the 2023-24 regular season, and it will supplement and replace the Player Resting Policy, which was put in place prior to the 2017-18 season.

The Player Participation Policy will largely target star players. For the purposes of the policy, a star player is defined as any player who was named to an All-NBA squad or an NBA All-Star squad in any of the previous three seasons. This definition also applies to any player named an All-Star during a given season following the All-Star Game.

According to the guideline, unless a club establishes an approved reason for a star player not to participate in a game, the team must, among other things:

  • Make sure that no more than one of its star players is unavailable for the same game.
  • Ensure that all national broadcast and NBA In-Season Tournament games feature prominent players.
  • Maintain a balance of one-game absences for a star player in home and away games.
  • Avoid any long-term "shutdowns" in which a star player does not play games.
  • When resting a healthy player, make sure he or she is present at games and visible to supporters.

There are exceptions for injuries, personal reasons, and pre-approved back-to-back limits based on a player's age, career workload, or history of serious injuries.
